A Beginner’s Guide to Rock Climbing in the Gold Coast

on 30 July 2019 in Health & beauty
If you have been watching hit TV program Australian Ninja Warrior, you will know that one of the best all round fitness activities is rock climbing. This activity involves climbing up, down or across natural rock formations or artificial rock walls. The goal is to reach the summit of a formation or the endpoint of a predefined route without falling. Physically and mentally demanding, rock climbing is a full body workout that can:

  • Increase your range of motion and flexibility
  • Strengthen and tone muscle
  • Improved your grip strength
  • Increase brain function over time
  • Reduce stress
  • Burn calories
  • Reward you with breathtaking sights
  • Help you conquer fear
  • Push you to challenge yourself

There are several types of rock climbing to conquer, including:

  • Top-roping
  • Lead/sport climbing
  • Traditional climbing
  • Big wall climbing
  • Bouldering

To help you find which type best suits you, the Gold Coast and surrounds offers some great beginner rock climbs, both indoor and outdoor…

Alpine Indoor Climbing is built for climbers, by climbers. The region’s only Blocz manufactured climbing gym (Blocz have a solid reputation as the best designed and most technical climbing gyms in the world), Alpine Indoor Climbing is the place to test yourself. You can even test yourself against identical climbs anywhere in the world. Climb what the pros climb and visit Alpine Indoor Climbing.

Game Over

Game Over’s Clip N Climb is a theme park meets climbing wall. Outdoor

Mt Barney Lodge

Mt Barney Lodge is located in the beautiful Scenic Rim, about 1 hr 45 minutes from the Gold Coast. You can visit for the day or stay overnight with a range of accommodation options. With stunning scenery of the McPherson ranges you can enjoy a range of activities, including rock climbing, abseiling, guided bushwalks and mountain expeditions. Rock climbs to choose from include a beginners climb, advanced climb, abseiling, lead climbing, a razorback multi pitch climb and hidden valley challenge.

Kangaroo Point Cliffs

For a beginner rock climber, Brisbane’s Kangaroo Point Cliffs is definitely a favourite. Difficulty grades range from level 11 - 27 and its convenient location makes it a popular place for climbers of all abilities. Joining a club will allow you to put off having to buy your own gear for a while too.

Pages Pinnacle

Located out by Hinze Dam Catchment, Pages Pinnacle is a long walk in and uphill but the huge array of good length climbs makes the walk worth it. The proof in the pudding is that the spot is becoming hugely popular with Gold Coast climbers. The bolting is good and new routes are being added all the time as the upper reaches of the headwall is developed.

Glass House Mountains

Further north still, the Glass House Mountains are packed with fantastic climbs and you can often find beginner climbs and more advanced climbs sitting side by side. Some of the best places in the Glass House Mountains for beginners include:

Mount Ngungun
Mt Ngungun has a large variety of rock climbing routes in a relatively small space. The perfect introductory location for those entering the world of outdoor rock climbing, it has a special place in many rock climbers hearts. Book with Pinnacle Sports and enjoy highly trained guides, all the gear you need and a unique 6 hour experience.

Mt Tibrogargan
It’s a bit of a walk in, but Mt Tibrogargan’s Lower Slider is a great route for beginners. The short, vertical face on positive edges makes for an easy climb and while it’s steep, you can push your limits while gazing at the steeper, beautiful orange rock of Upper Slider. Bear in mind that it can get busy on weekends.

Mt Beerwah
Mosquito Wall, Mt Beerwah is a bit of a hidden gem. It has a shorter but steeper face and more sustained climbing than Mt Ngungun and the foot of the crag is quite spacious, making for a comfortable belay. There are 10 routes to choose from, with various grades. Pack your deet, as the name lives up to its reputation - there are lots of mozzies here.

Binna Burra Mountain Lodge

Binna Burra’s adventure activities are open to both day visitors and those seeking an overnight stay. Trek 30 minutes into the bush to discover the thrill and heart pumping action of abseiling before taking on the challenge of a 10m, 40m or 90m cliff face.

Preparing to climb

If you’re interested in learning how to climb, or you’re looking to amp up your climbing strengths and skills, joining a climbing gym or trying your hand at one of the above outdoor locations is a great way to get started.

The other thing to do is to head to The Strand Coolangatta and pick yourself up the appropriate clothing. Look for clothes that offer comfort and mobility - a loose, stretchy fit without being baggy. Yoga clothing works well, which you can pick up from stores such as Lorna Jane and Boardriders. For shoes, head to Coolangatta Menswear or Sole Integrity and look for flexible shoes with grippy soles that fit snugly without hurting your feet.

Happy rock climbing!
