While we love our sun-drenched beach lifestyle, unfortunately Coolangatta has some of the highest rates of melanoma in Australia. That’s why we’re proud to support ‘Melanoma March
’: a 3km walk on Sunday 22nd March, starting at The Strand and heading south to Duranbah; raising much needed funds for breakthrough melanoma research and world-first clinical trials.
Melanoma March is part of a national campaign run by the Melanoma Institute Australia, aiming to raise $1 million for research into the prevention and cure of this disease. The first March was held in Sydney in 2012, organised by a man who lost his son to melanoma. What started as a local event soon grew into a national fundraising initiative, and in 2014 over 6,000 people marched for a cure and raised $550,000 for melanoma research
Nicola Ware, General Manager, MIA said, “Australia has the highest incidence of melanoma in the world with over 12,500 new cases diagnosed each year, and alarmingly, the highest percentage of diagnoses is in the South East Queensland corner.
“The annual ‘Melanoma March’ event is the principal fundraiser for MIA and the monies raised from the 2014 campaign have gone towards launching the Brain Mets Trial – a world‐first clinical trial that aims to benefit patients with advanced melanoma tumors that have spread to the brain (metastases).”
Local residents Jenny Thulborn and Tony Van de Wakker are the dedicated volunteers bringing ‘Melanoma March’ to Coolangatta in 2015. This is a very personal cause for the pair, as Tweed resident Jenny is a three-and-a-half year, stage 4 melanoma survivor.
“I am living proof that small steps make a big difference,” she said. The duo have committed their time and efforts to educate others of the dangers of melanoma and to raise funds for research projects taking place at Melanoma Institute Australia. Get Involved
This is the fourth year for the walk and the first time it will take place at Cooly beach, so it’s a great opportunity for the local community to get involved. Thinking about taking part
