How to Make Your Hair Healthier

You don't need to invest in expensive styling products and time-consuming regimes to enjoy the benefits of healthier, happier hair. Following these five everyday tips could be all that's needed to banish bad hair days for life.

1. Don't overwash
Even the experts can't agree on the ideal interval for washing hair, but it's generally agreed that washing every day does more harm than good. Daily shampooing strips the natural oils that protect hair from drying out, and can be especially damaging to coloured hair.

Cutting back to wash your hair no more than three times a week, you should see a positive difference after the first week.

2. Target the roots, not the ends
It's not just when you wash, but how you wash – and not how much shampoo and conditioner you use, but how you use it. A coin-sized dollop is generally all that's needed for hair of any length, and this should be gently massaged into the scalp to enrich the roots, detoxify and encourage good circulation.

3. Use styling tools sparingly
Curling tongs, straighteners and even hair dryers can be a recipe for disaster when used frequently and improperly. Using styling tools every day strips the hair's natural colour, while excessive use of hair dryers leaves hair looking lifeless and frizzy. If you do need to blow dry your hair, use the lowest setting on cool.

4. Avoid chemical treatments
So many things we try to improve our hair only end up causing more problems, especially when chemicals are involved. If you want to try out a new colour, avoid chemical dyes and bleaching and try natural tea and henna dyes instead.

Chemical straightening and perming can also cause long-term damage, but fortunately there are natural alternatives available – as long as you accept that there's no healthy way to change your hair's colour or texture permanently.

5. Healthy diet, healthy hair
As with all areas of the body, the health of your hair is directly related to what you eat. A well-balanced diet rich in vitamins and nutrients is one of the best long-term solutions for looking after your hair, especially when you consume plenty of protein (meat, fish, eggs) and omega 3 fatty acids (oily fish, avocados).

Staying hydrated is important too. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day and limiting your intake of alcohol, coffee and soft drinks will help your hair hold on to its natural radiance.
